Cakes and sculputures for your wedding day
Traditionally wedding Cakes are fruit based with a covering of marzipan and icing. Round or square they are then stacked 2 or 3 tiers high - although you can have as many as gravity allows! Today things are a little more flexible. You can choose from fruit, sponge, chocolate sponge or just about any other cake type you can think of! Banana and walnut, carrot cake the choice is yours. In order to keep all tastes catered for you can opt for a mixture!
Top styling
Your cake style will be mainly determined by your wedding itself i.e., if you are having a formal or informal day. If you are looking for a traditional tiered white iced cake you will need to place your order months in advance. Be sure to visit several cake designers to see and taste their cakes. You can decorate the cake with figurines, artificial or fresh flowers (check with a florist for the best types to use). You can get your florist to design a posy to sit on the cake in keeping with your bridal flowers.
Many couples opt for novelty cakes - maybe incorporating your honeymoon destination or a shared interest or hobby. Cake designers will be happy to listen to your ideas in order to make a bespoke cake for your big day. If you are ordering your cake from a cake designer check what arrangements they will make in order to get the cake to your wedding venue. Especially if the your wedding falls in a Sunday. Equally check with your venue to ensure they be able to receive and store your cake before the wedding. If your wedding venue does not assist with the cutting of your cake then make sure your cake designer carefully explains the best way to go about this. Maybe get another family member to come with you - so you do not have to worry with the details on the day.
The cheap option?
Several large supermarkets sell excellent plainly iced 'occasion' cakes. They come in various sizes with a choice of fruit, sponge or chocolate sponge fillings. Topping the cake with fresh flowers makes a very cost effective option. The main consideration with this is that you will need to transport / assemble the cake. Many venues or even florists will assist you with this - worth asking though just to make sure!
If you would like to go for a very individual option then you an use small iced cupcakes or even profiteroles piled decoratively. It's becoming more popular to use your wedding cake as your dessert - especially with the more non traditional venues. The cutting of the cake traditionally occurs after the speeches and before the dancing begins. The act of the bride and groom cutting the cake together is a symbol of fertility. Any single females guests can also follow the age old tradition of taking their piece of cake home to sleep with it under their pillow - not such a good idea if you are having the profiteroles!!!
