A guide to Berlin
Ok, so you know there is a good night to be had, but not too many people know much about the city itself. It’s big, spread out and hard to pinpoint an exact centre. Don’t worry though - the metro system is fantastic, cheap and easy to use.
City centreBerlin has so much history and so many sights to be seen. Even Berlins tourist board took the slogan ‘Berlin – different every hour’ to explain this amazing city.In central Berlin you will find the Brandenburg Gates – the main entry point where east meet west. Today it’s on every tourist’s itinerary and well worth seeing at night. Close by is the famous Reichstag, Berlins parliamentary home. This is a major tourist attraction with a stunning glass roof. The Unter Den Linden runs up to Alexanderplatz, a busy square with a high rise TV tower offering spectacular views over the city.
Top spotsPotsdamer Platz is a highly modern area designed by world renowned architects. Close by is the remains of ‘check point charlie’ – the famous boarder crossing point in the Berlin wall. The wall itself can still be found in a few locations. Across the river in Friedrichshain one of the largest sections still stands, although it has been turned into a graffiti art gallery, the East Side Gallery.Nikolaiviertel is a fantastic area to explore on foot. Here you will find many restaurants and bars. The Nikolai church is the oldest standing building in Berlin. The Kurfustendamm (or Ku’damm) is a major shopping area of Berlin. This area can get very busy during the summer months. At one end of the Ku’Damm you will find Berlin’s world famous zoological gardens.
