Amsterdam bars & pubs

Cafes, brown bars, pubs and bars - choice is not an issue in Amsterdam. Of course famous for the Heineken factory and its beer (better in Amsterdam than overseas), Amsterdam serves up far more that that with an endless choice to suit all tastes.

The lowdown

Beer - theres plenty of it, but just one thing to clear up here; The local standard measure is a paltry 250ml. This also comes with rather a large helping of head - a two finger depth is the standard issue. Dont be offended, its the norm. But if you want a pink ask for it.

Cafes are a plenty and serve from around midday and thru to about 11pm. Brown bars or Bruin Kroegen are about the same. Brown bars are an integral part of Amsterdam's social life. So called due the smoke stained walls, these bars are usually full of locals and lots of character.

There are hundreds of pubs around and no explanation needed there. With many Irish bars dotted around the centre you are never short of a good pint. For a great Amsterdam package check out the Heineken brewery in Amsterdam that starts at an Irish bar and includes a few free drinks and tour of the brewery.

Main drinking hotspots

Rembrandtplein - Infamous for its nightlife. Plenty of cafes, brown bars and restaurants for all tastes. Close by is Reguliersdwarsstraat, the trendy street of the moment popular among the upmarket crowd.

Nieuwmarkt - One of Amsterdam's main squares. Busy and full of bars and cafes and located at the edge of Amsterdam's Red Light District. This is a picturesque open space with lots of entertainment.

Leidesplein - Always has new bars opening. This square is a real nightlife hotspot with lots of cafes, pus and bars. Home to the Bulldog café (Amsterdam's oldest coffee shop). Loud and brash, mainly a tourist hangout but with the best of Amsterdam's clubs. Check out the Bulldog - even has a souvenir shop!

Red Light - Actually has many traditional bars and pubs. Not short of watering holes - some with great views! Here you will find the Banana Bar, popular with stag parties. Operates with a fixed entry price for an hour's entrance inclusive of drinks. Naked women, free bar and of course bananas - need we say any more. Just remember any 'tricks' are extra and you will be hustled thru pretty quickly. Good fun if it is your first time in Amsterdam.
